Mercer Island Rings in the Lunar New Year with a Spectacular Community Celebration

Yuan Fan

On February 2, 2025, the Mercer Island Chinese Association (MICA) and the City of Mercer Island co-hosted a vibrant Lunar New Year Festival, drawing over 1,200 attendees to celebrate one of the most significant holidays in Asian culture. The event featured 30 performances, interactive activities and games, delicious food, and participation from over 50 organizations and partners, making it a true community-wide celebration.

A Showcase of Talent and Tradition

The festival came to life with a diverse lineup of 30 performances, ranging from the exhilarating lion dance to traditional and contemporary music and dance showcases. Talented performers of all ages took the stage, sharing their cultural heritage with an enthusiastic crowd.

One of the highlights of the festival was the Community Hour, where students from the Mercer Island School District had the opportunity to perform and showcase their talents. It was a heartwarming moment that brought together families, friends, and neighbors to celebrate the next generation’s connection to culture and the arts.

Food, Fun, and Cultural Activities

No Lunar New Year celebration is complete without delicious food, and this festival was no exception! Attendees enjoyed a variety of traditional Asian dishes and festive treats, adding to the joyful and communal atmosphere.

Beyond the performances and food, families participated in hands-on activities and festival games. Attendees tried their hand at calligraphy, lantern-making, and cultural trivia, while children delighted in traditional Lunar New Year crafts and interactive games.

Community Collaboration and Support

This year’s event was made possible through the incredible support of our 50+ partner organizations, whose contributions helped create a welcoming and inclusive atmosphere. A special thank you to our main sponsors, Asian Family Market and Think Academy, for their generous support in bringing this celebration to life.

Looking Forward

The overwhelming enthusiasm for this year’s festival reaffirms the importance of cultural celebrations in strengthening community bonds. MICA and the City of Mercer Island are proud to continue this tradition and look forward to an even bigger and better celebration next year!

A heartfelt thank you to all our attendees, volunteers, performers, and partners for making this event a resounding success. We can’t wait to celebrate with you again next year!
